ELD Compliance Software & Document Management
Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) became mandatory for most commercial motor vehicle operators under the FMCSA ELD rule. An ELD records your hours of service automatically, eliminating paper logs for most drivers. But hours of service is only one component of DOT compliance — and your ELD doesn't manage any of the rest.
What the ELD Mandate Covers
The ELD rule applies to drivers who are required to maintain records of duty status under 49 CFR Part 395. This covers most commercial drivers operating in interstate commerce with vehicles over 10,001 lbs GVWR. Limited exemptions apply to short-haul drivers, driveaway-towaway operations, and vehicles manufactured before model year 2000. Your ELD must be registered with FMCSA, meet technical specifications, and be connected to your engine for automatic recording.
What Your ELD Doesn't Handle
HOS compliance is just one part of a DOT compliance review. Your ELD won't remind you that your CDL medical certificate expires in 30 days, that your annual vehicle inspection is overdue, or that your IFTA filing is due next week. These gaps in coverage are exactly where carriers get caught during compliance reviews.
- Driver Qualification files (CDL, medical card, MVR, employment application)
- Vehicle maintenance records and annual inspection reports
- Insurance certificates and operating authority documents
- Drug and alcohol testing records
- Permits and registrations (IFTA, IRP, oversize/overweight)
- Accident registers and roadside inspection reports
Documents Required Alongside Your ELD
During a roadside inspection, the officer will check your ELD data — but they'll also ask for your CDL, medical card, vehicle registration, and insurance card. If any of these are expired or missing, ELD compliance won't save you from an out-of-service order. DVIR records (Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports) must be retained for 90 days and be available for inspection separately from your ELD data.
